The smell of freshly fallen rain on the Brecon Beacon mountain grass just as the sun reappears in the early afternoon is such an evocative and powerful mix of senses that it makes the journey from London to Wales a pure pleasure.. It’s just a shame that one of us had to make the journey by train and miss it!!
After a quick set up at the side of the top table and next to the Caribbean steel band we made our way into town to eat … After some hunting we happened upon Number Eighteen Brasserie … It didn’t open to 18.00 !!!! Never mind ! we drop into the Britannia public house for a quick coffee for the odd 30 minutes before service.
It wasn’t long before the local mayor Clr. Dave Collier and his wife noticed and joined us to welcomed us to Crickhowell He recognized us as a band right away and assumed we had been booked to play tomorrow’s local festival he was opening …After a while he realized that wasn’t the case and we were to play at the wedding in the town. Not before however he began to tell us how he had volunteered to open the festival dressed in full mayoral regalia.. paragliding into the main arena with flares attached to his ankles. He was straight away nicknamed the “Mayor in the air”. He also new all about the wedding and Geoff and Linda who were the owners of Porthmawr Country House.
The wedding breakfast began and finished about an hour behind schedule which is par for a good wedding. After the earlier rainfall the evening sky cleared and the daylight drifted into dusk bathed in warm summer evening sunshine …being nested in a valley the sun cast long autumn-like shadows across the gardens whilst the children played uninterrupted on the grass pausing only to explore the water features !! statues !! and farm animals!!!.
Our first set began with Debbie and Gareth’s first dance choice of We belong by Pat Benatar. It wasnt too long after which (about 30 secs) guest got into party mood and the dance floor began to fill. We paused for a while after 40 mins or so for bacon butty’s … what is it about the smell of bacon being cooked ?? !!…. Im surprised there’s not a fast food chain built around that smell !! Refreshed from the break we began what was to be the last set .. the dance floor was so full and pumping we didn’t have the heart to stop for a second break but carried straight on through to the very strict curfew of midnight. That was it we thought but the guests … and … the venue owners were having none of that !!! just one more … just one more came the usual cry but this time five times over and when we eventually had to finish and had changed and returned to the marquee to clear away, the dance floor was still full with guests dancing and singing along to the quite, wind down music!!!
What a night!!!!
If Debbie and Gareth’s marriage continues as exciting they have a wonderful life in store.
God bless
